Dear Friends,

--You gotta love middle schoolers! I was the “pastor on the hot seat” at a recent Sunday night gathering of Presbyterian Youth Connection. This is where they ask me their funny and serious questions. From “Why did you go into the ministry?” to “What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?” From “What is your favorite Bible verse?” to “Did you have girlfriends other than your wife?” From “How do you decide what the sermon is going to be about?” to “What is the lowest score you have ever had on a golf course?” Fun!

--Our congregation is embracing Lent through worship and study. On Ash Wednesday, we began our Lenten journey with the imposition of the ashes, a deeply meaningful service that points us to spiritual disciplines. In worship, a sermon series called Under Pressure in Jerusalem and Greensboro examines the events and characters surrounding Jesus on that final week. As well, a number of small groups are meeting and running the gamut from “In the Company of Jesus” to seeing “Golf as a Spiritual Discipline.”

A new wrinkle in our Holy Week services will see us move out of Center City Park and into our sanctuary for noonday services on Monday through Wednesday, March 29 to 31. I am excited that preachers for these services will be John McCall, the new minister at Westminster Presbyterian, Ken Massey from First Baptist and Diane Givens Moffett from St. James Presbyterian.

Our Just A Thought® ministry continues to reach into the Triad through one-minute spiritual messages on local FM radio station WKZL, 107.5. These play each weekday between 7:30 and 8 a.m. These “thoughts” are also available through e-mail distribution, delivered early each weekday morning. We have a subscription list of about 400 recipients. If you are interested in receiving these audio messages, click here and enter your name and e-mail address and click Submit. I was reminded last week of how these messages reach into our community. A bank teller and an employee at the drive-through window at Chick-fil-A recognized a familiar radio voice and asked me about it.

You received a letter from Neil and me recently describing the painful decisions our leadership has made due to budget stresses. If you want to better understand our short-term and long-term financial plan, there will be a gathering in Redhead Hall on Monday, March 8, at 6 p.m. In the midst of the Great Recession, many, many of our members are responding generously and sacrificially, enabling us to make a difference in Greensboro and the world.

We are seeing an increasing number of visitors on Sundays. Just a reminder that it is always important for our members to look around, go out of our way and welcome unfamiliar faces. Nothing means more to a first-time guest!

Our ministry to those who have lost jobs (FPC Jobsnet) continues to make a difference. Nearly 200 people are in this group. One of the best ways we can help is by being in touch when hearing of a job opening. Contact Bill Linton, wtlecl@aol.com or 288-2467, if you know of job opportunities.

Grace and peace,

Sid
