Welcome to our Winter Emergency Shelter

For the second year in a row, we are extending hope and hospitality to 20 homeless men by becoming their home every night between Dec. 1 and March 31.

Our registered guests are the same men each night, which will enable us to build a nurturing and supportive community over these next several months.  The shelter space is located in the Scout Room below Memorial Chapel. Get directions.

As one of several emergency shelters open this winter, we will need the help of many volunteers during the 120 nights that we are operational, including overnight volunteers, weekend greeters, meal providers, Sunday morning worship hosts and Saturday morning hosts. In particular, we want to encourage additional male volunteers to spend the night at the shelter, where there will always be a paid staff employee present during the overnight hours.

Additional volunteers are also needed for Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. for a variety of activities and possibilities.  Neighbors, families, study groups or individuals could select a Saturday morning activity.   This would allow our shelter residents to become further engaged and stay warm when many public spaces are closed.  Suggested activities are:

  1. Trips to the Laundromat
  2. Bring in hot biscuits and start a book club/current events discussion
  3. Cook a hot breakfast in the Redhead Hall kitchen that involves the shelter residents in preparation and cleanup
  4. Explore artistic talents of the residents by conducting an arts/crafts class
  5. Provide leadership and guidance for job preparedness skills
