A few giving hints

By Myles Fish, director of stewardship and discipleship

Myles FishWe seem to spend more time discussing WHY we should give than HOW to give.

I want to address that this month by highlighting a few “giving hints” that have been shared with me over the years.

-- Try giving a bit more than your pledge. If that seems to work, increase your pledge the next year. Then repeat each year.

-- When you get a raise, allocate part of it to your giving. Because the raise isn’t part of your current budget, this doesn’t require any lifestyle changes.

-- Partner with a close friend and periodically check in to see if each of you is staying on track – you don’t need to share amounts.

-- If you are paid 26 times a year, you have two months every year with three paychecks. Include half of those “extra” paychecks in your pledge.

-- Connect your giving with your lifestyle with a “luxury tax” – anytime you buy something that isn’t a necessity, add 10 percent of the purchase price to your church gifts.

-- The most helpful tip? Get help from a financial advisor and get free of debt. Perhaps these will lead you to think of your own techniques or hints. Send yours to add to the list, and we will share in future magazines.

Charitable tax provision

People who are 70½ years of age and older can donate up to $100,000 to FPC (or another charity) directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts. These distributions will not be treated as taxable income. Depending on your circumstances, this could be an excellent way to fulfill campaign pledges, annual pledges, or to make a special year end gift to the ministries of First Presbyterian Church. Please consult with your tax advisor before making a final decision, but we wanted you to know that this provision is now permanent.
