Nov. 13, 2009 — John Wooden
John Wooden, the legendary basketball coach, recently celebrated his 99th birthday. Hailed as a national success story, Wooden led his teams to 10 college titles and four undefeated seasons.
But Wooden had his own definition of success. Success, he stated, is the peace of mind and satisfaction that comes from knowing you did your best. Well, our best might mean coaching UCLA to victory, or it might mean sitting patiently with our son as he grudgingly practices his multiplication tables.
I have the feeling that what we judge as success and what God judges as success are often very different. But John Wooden seems to point us in the right direction.
Just a thought. I'm Sid Batts from First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greensboro, fpcgreensboro.org.
