March 8, 2010 — A mantra

Years ago I listened to a golf-teaching guru on tape. He suggested that golfers should create a mantra of sorts, stating how we would like to perform and what kind of golfers we'd like to become – that we state in the present what we hope to be in the future.

I created something like this: "I am a good golfer. I am a solid, low handicapper. I am an even better putter under pressure."

The key is to state and to see ourselves as better than we are and then become as we picture ourselves.

How, then, might we see our future selves as spiritual people? How about creating a mantra that says, "I am a strong and growing person of faith. I pray daily, listening to God. I dispense grace in all that I do."

Just a thought. I'm Sid Batts from First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greensboro, fpcgreensboro.org.
