Jan. 19, 2010 — Miraculous staircase

When the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe was completed in 1878, there was a problem. Carpenters couldn’t figure out how to build a staircase to the choir loft 22 feet above the small chapel.

Legend says that, in search of a solution, the nuns prayed to St. Joseph, patron saint of carpenters. On the final day of prayer, a man with a donkey and a tool box came looking for work. Within months, he had built an elegant circular staircase. Then he disappeared without pay or thanks.

Some say it was the nuns’ prayers that brought the carpenter to Santa Fe – which, of course, we will never know.

However, we will remember the words of Jesus who said, “All things are possible for those who believe.”
