Feb. 24, 2010 — Hockey miracle
Thirty years ago a scrappy bunch of U.S. hockey players lifted a nation's spirits by winning perhaps the biggest upset in Olympic history.
Americans were hostages in Iran. The economy was tanking. And with that backdrop, the American ice-hockey team confronted a Soviet squad that hadn't lost a game since 1968.
But the Americans won 4-3 and captured the gold medal two days later. It was the biggest upset since David took out Goliath, and when Hollywood told this story, they gave the movie a one-word title: Miracle.
Which reminds us that spiritual people have their eyes open to the surprising and often small miracles that occur each day.
Just a thought. I'm Sid Batts from First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greensboro, fpcgreensboro.org.
