Feb. 17, 2010 — The hedgehog's dilemma

As human beings, we naturally seek out the companionship of others. But there's a catch. Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer described it as the hedgehog’s dilemma.

During cold weather, a group of hedgehogs will huddle together to share their heat. But as they draw closer, they prick one another with their sharp quills, so they back away.

Schopenhauer recommended that we approach human relationships with caution – and not get too close – so that we don’t hurt ourselves or others.

Jesus took a different approach. He showed us how to move beyond being the flawed, prickly humans that we are. His prescription was love, respect, equality and forgiveness.

And it’s a great remedy for the hedgehog dilemma.
