Dec. 11, 2009 — Following up
on coincidence
Alexander Fleming claimed he discovered penicillin by coincidence when a stray mold spore landed on a bacterial culture in his lab.
No one knows how that spore got into Fleming’s lab. The important thing is that he and other researchers followed up on the event. They developed a life-saving drug which could fight infections.
So when a coincidence occurs, maybe it’s important to pursue it, to see where it can take us. And I wonder if the disciples thought that meeting Jesus was a coincidence.
I like the saying “coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” Had any meaningful events lately that seemed like a coincidence?
Just a thought. I'm Sid Batts from First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greensboro, fpcgreensboro.org.
